Thank you so much, we've received so many nice e-mails and comments about how great our site is so we're just writing to say thanks :)
Sometimes we talk about how the media and sports and such are so sexist, but sometimes the everyday breed of sexism can be the most hurtful. It's how random people on the street ask young girls on their own why they aren't smiling as if there were not a care in the world, it's how the occasional PE teacher will separate students into groups of strength based on gender, it's these things and more that build the sexist world we live in today. I like to believe that the two sexes started out equal, and were that way for a while, but then it started getting worse, when because of their job, and I believe their job was sufficient, and not demeaning, but then that made them seem weak to the men, which is what started sexism. I think that it probably got steadily worse and worse over time, and then, fairly recently, in the grand scheme of things, it started getting better. I think that the only thing stopping us from complete equality for men and women is the few men in high positions who are extremely sexist, plus the millions of women who don't believe in themselves, and who think men are better, plus, and this is a very big reason, some men see feminism as either a threat to their manliness, some men see it as attacking the male gender, others just don't want women to be their equals because, for whatever reason, they believe themselves to be superior. Some of these images are from a while ago, but the ones from the Google searches are really powerful, and really speak to this day and age. So this slide kind of speaks to what I've been saying about sexism through the ages, but I am now thinking that, maybe some of the things we thought were gone are really only in disguise. Think about what you can do to reveal and stop them.
Sooo, like I get all this junk about women not being strong enough to play with men, but I mean seriously, no woman NFL teams! That's just crazy, women can be just as strong as men and if the NFL can't see that then at least create a women's division that's just as popular, and has the same amount money behind it as the men's team! When I googled "Women's football league" and searched for images, I found these: Yikes! So apparently there is this "Lingerie League" were women play football in their underwear, that's just crazy sexist! Also here are some videos with more info, this is soooo scary! This one is a little more illuminating, and scary! We'll usually try to post something more inspiring
Feminist frequency is a youtube channel run by Anita Sarkeesian, a feminists gamer. Anita did a kickstarter to gain enough money to launch her mission. The mission is to spread the word about sexism, and more importantly, about feminism. This video about the Hunger Games, book v.s. movie, and we encourage you to watch it, if you like it, you should really check out her youtube channel, Feminist Frequency. These videos are really awesome and she really covers all the bases, she talks about how these things effect the growth and development of girls, but she also talks about how the result of a lot of this is basically saying that boys can't be compassionate or caring. In our school, we did a unit on feminism and sexism, we watched a lot of Feminist Frequency, and we learned a lot about the inequalities of the modern day. Some of the other kids in our class also made websites on weebly or webs, so you should also check out teenfeminists.webs.com, a website created by one of our friends. We are only three middle schoolers, but our mission is to make the tiniest dent in sexism. there are some people who make HUGE holes in sexism, so we will try to direct you to them, as well as try to make our own dents. I would also like to point you towards Tavi Gevinson and her website www.rookiemag.com, we would also like you to check out this ted talk that she did. These two women are so inspirational, and they are so good at pointing out EVERYTHING that's wrong, plus splashing in some of the good things. We hope these inspire you, if so tell us about it, our email is on the contact page, you can also comment on the comment page. Thank you for reading our blog, and hopefully watching these amazing videos!
